When you work a long day, it can be hard to stay focused. If your energy starts to diminish, you'll need to find ways to keep your mind sharp. Whether you go for that extra cup of coffee in the afternoon or rely on energy breath mints, caffeine can give you just the boost you need to get through your day. While too much caffeine can leave you feeling restless or jittery, some caffeine can help keep you from yawning. It's important to also take frequent breaks, stretch, and eat smaller meals throughout the day to keep your energy levels consistent.

Know the Sources of Caffeine

Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, some soft drinks, chocolate and even some breath mints. When you overload on caffeine, you probably won't feel very well. If you optimize your caffeine intake, you will have the energy you need to get your job done. Caffeine can help get rid of headaches, especially those caused from tension. In moderation, caffeine is not harmful to you.

Get Up and Stretch

If you find yourself drifting off as you sit at your desk, take a few minutes to get up and stretch. Even a quick walk around the office will get your blood circulating. This brings fresh oxygen to your system, helping your mind wake up. Some stretching will further improve your circulation, so you will begin to feel refreshed within a few minutes.

Do Five Minutes of Deep Breathing

When you need to focus and you feel scattered, take the time to spend five minutes with this mindfulness exercise. Find somewhere that you won't be disturbed for five to ten minutes. Breathe in deeply to the count of five, and release the breath in a count of five. Focus on getting control of your breathing, bringing the air in and out at the same pace. This will slow down your stress response and help you feel calm so that you can get back to work.

Try Eating Smaller Meals Throughout the Day

When you skip breakfast and have a large lunch five hours later, you are setting yourself up for exhaustion. To improve your energy levels and endurance, you should be eating smaller meals throughout the day. This will help keep your blood sugar levels normal and avoid the ups and downs that come with starving and then overeating. You will find that your energy levels are more balanced this way.
